Below is a list of some of the routines we will have in 5-2:
Daily 5 and CAFE: An English Language Arts based activity that improves reading and writing in middle-aged children. Options during these periods include read to self, read to someone, word work, work on writing, and listen to reading.
- TUSC (Totally Unbelievable Speaking Club): This is another English Language Arts activity that is held weekly and emphasizes public speaking and listening skills. Students are given a role each week and are asked to prepare a presentation for their classmates on any topic they’d like, as long as it falls within their role. For example, the World News Reporter will prepare a report on any news story he/she likes as long as it is current and appropriate. TUSC is completed entirely at home each week and TUSC meetings are held once a school cycle.
- Words Their Way: This is a spelling program that is more than just that. It breaks down words for students so it is easier to decipher and is known to improve spelling skills in students. Spelling tests are given once a cycle as well, and new words are given following the test. Activities are to be completed with each new set of words. Students will be given time during these spelling periods once a cycle and they will have the option to work on this during Daily 5 periods under “word work” time.
- Library: Once a cycle, we will go down to the library for a book exchange period. Students can peruse the library for a new, hot read and they will have the opportunity to sit down with their new books and read in a new location. Arthur A Leach is blessed with such a big and beautiful library! Students are welcome to go to the library before and after school, as well as during breaks and lunch time.
- Science and Social Studies: Instead of doing one unit from each subject at the same time, I find it more beneficial for the students to alternate our focus for these subjects. For example, we will have a 3 week Social Studies unit with no science unit going on at the same time. Once this unit is complete, we will start the next science unit with no social studies going on. This allows students to really dive into the topic with less “revision time” which can be used for learning new ideas.
- Math Conditioning: We will start most math classes with some math fact conditioning. This will help your child master basic mathematic operation skills. It is very important to practice your mathematic operation skills, especially in grade 5 when the math gets a little bit harder!
- Agendas: We will be using our agendas daily as a way to keep ourselves organized and keep on top of important dates as well as any homework. Please look at your child’s agenda every day to ensure nothing is missed and that you are in the loop. Refer to the classroom website if ever your child is away!
- Homework: Your child may be assigned homework during the week or on weekends. Students will be expected to record their homework in their Agendas. Much of what is “homework” will be work that has not been completed in class or a topic that needs additional practice. I will always give enough class-time to finish work.
- Projects and Assignments: We will be working on numerous projects and assignments during the year. Students will always be given a specific due date for any project or assignment. Sometimes we will break projects down into smaller steps with individual due dates to make the workload a lot easier!
- Partners/groups: We will always be working with different partners and groups throughout the year. In 5-2 we are always a TEAM! You will be given partners in a variety of ways and I will always specify and be in charge of making groups or choosing partners. It will be fun for us to all work together!
